Gruff Rhys, ‘I Love EU’

Unpopcult normally welcomes distractions from real life. But today, for some reason, we aren’t really in the mood to write about TV. So here’s a song from the 62%.

Asking the important question: Does this mean UK doesn’t get to be in Eurovision?

    (Pedantic answer to playful/rhetorical question…)

No – Eurovision is a network of broadcasting companies and not a creation of the EU. The U.K. competed, like other countries, before joining the EEC, as it then was.

I look forward, though, to Scotland’s debut.

Scotland will Rise like a Phoenix, no?

I think we may be Making our Minds Up to do that very thing.

I had no idea you’re both Scots (JB & CJ) – that is correct?

Nationality can be a complicated thing, but aye – we both live in Scotland.

Yes, it can be complicated. Can I just say that as a fellow Brit (who happens to be English) I just want to put it on record that I bloody love this United Kingdom. And whatever strife and strains tug at our union presently, I hope some path can be found which works for us to go forward as one. I believe this path can be found and I very much desire we can walk it together.

Let it not be said that there can’t be an emotive or personal case made for the Union. Yes, there are a vocal, deeply irritating minority of English folk who are ambivalent at best to towards maintaining Britain but they are, for whatever the decibel level of their complaint or rejection, very firmly in the minority. Rest assured Scots are seen with warmth and great affection in the other three GB nations – and that together we’re all British – from Cornwall to Skaw, from Ballymena to Great Yarmouth.

I have no idea if you’re pro or otherwise on Scottish independence but I wanted to say my piece anyway in light of recent events in the last few years.

Aw, thanks Ashley – it’s such a fraught, unsettling time across the entire UK just now, here’s hoping that whatever happens and however it all pans out, things start to look sunnier for everyone soon.
