The Good Wife s7 ep 5

In “Payback,” Alicia and Lucca take a case about debt collection company harassment and turn it into a case about for-profit university education, while Jason Crouse basically turns into Kalinda with jeans and a smile. Marissa – Marissa! – comes back to carry out an Eli-related intervention but Eli refuses to be, um, intervened. And hostilities come to a head between Cary and Howard, in an episode which manages to include arbitration, mediation, an adult diaper and a completely joyous scene involving comedy glasses and ageism sensitivity training at Lockhart Agos because why not. A genuinely fun and funny one this; I thought it was great, even if Grace needs to remember she’s a teenager not a business manager and Crouse is in real danger of becoming the show’s Root, he and the show are so bloody delighted with everything about him.

I really liked one-third of this: the Case of the Week was good, and I like the chemistry between Alicia, Lucca, and Jason.

Not so mad about the Howard Lyman story. He’s lazy, incompetent, and sexist, and the idea that he could run rings around Diane and Cary is preposterous. Almost worth it, though, for Diane’s line about the workplace: “And we’ve all made fun of David Lee for… well, you know”.

And still unconvinced about the Eli arc. As you know, I’m Marissa’s number 1 stan, so I’m more than delighted to see her back. But it’s becoming more and more obvious that the storyline only exists to keep Alan Cumming around. Which is a good reason in itself, but he really needs to be given something better to do. It is beyond belief that a Presidential campaign would tolerate someone who is explicitly trying to bring it down.
