After last week’s swoonathon, the writers obviously decided everyone watching needed a chance to calm down a bit; hence this earnest but resolutely uninspiring episode pushing handsome Neal and lovely Christa way, way into the background and focussing on Leanne, Malaya and a seemingly endless parade of gunshot victims.
Somewhat confusingly, the GSWs come from two entirely unconnected incidents: a shootout between a close cop friend of Leanne’s and a gangbanger/hitman assailant, which involves two cops, the assailant and some poor kid doing his homework all getting hit; and a suicide which either belongs in a different episode or deserves a different cause of death since lumping all these shootings together just makes things messy and confusing, not to mention way too contrived. I mean, the cop sub-plot is just an excuse to talk about Leanne’s Secret Pain, the suicide is just an excuse to talk about Malaya’s, and the plotting of both storylines is so calculated that I don’t care about either of them.
All is not completely lost, however, thanks to a brief flurry of fabulousness when Neal (Raza Jaffrey) is called in to
be amazing and gorgeous help Leanne and impresses the Other Dr Guthrie with his top-notch surgical skills, and when Christa (Bonnie Somerville) has to electrocute herself to save a patient. It’s no more than a few minutes of excitement but, in an otherwise dull-ish ep, it’s particularly welcome.
