Public Service Announcement 22 of 2012: Hell on Wheels

It’s been a bit quiet on the new shows front recently but the UK debut of Hell on Wheels , a downbeat western from AMC, set around the construction of the US’s first transcontinental railway, might well be worth a look (9pm, TCM, tonight.)

Anson Mount plays Clint Eastwood Cullen Bohannon, a former Confederate soldier hunting the Union soldiers who killed his wife and child, and the cast also includes Colm “Chief O’Brien” Meaney, rapper Common and lots of period detail.  Advance word suggests it’s a bit of a depresso-fest which owes a heavy debt to Deadwood, amongst other things: not having seen Deadwood I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not, but reaction to Hell on Wheels has been reasonably positive if not spectacular, it’s been renewed for a second season, and nearly everything else is finishing up for the summer so Jed or I may well find ourselves giving it a go.  If you already have, we’d love to hear what you thought.
