Smash s1 ep 1

Complete nonsense, of course. Still, I should probably watch one more episode just to be sure.

I was all set to hate it, and the first 10 minutes didn’t change my mind. I found them irritatingly predictable, the best gag – the interruption of Karen’s big number – was spoiled by the trailer, and Messing and Borle’s characters were incredibly obvious.

But then, slowly, I was sucked in till I was enjoying it so much I was almost punching the air at the triumphant end number. On balance? I kind of loved it.

Mainly because I love Jack Davenport, I’m a sucker for a Marc Shaiman soundtrack, and I remember Kat McPhee quite fondly from American Idol years ago – all of which came together in the one show, and that doesn’t happen very often.

I know this will be the high watermark of the season, but I’ll be back for the next couple of eps anyway.

Come for the soundtrack, stay for the Davenport.

This is the longest week in the world!

Why is it not Saturday yet, dammit?!? I’m already craving my next Davenport fix. (You know me too well, e.)

I liked it. Didn’t love it, but liked it – and more than I thought I was going to. Tuned in largely because of Davenport and McPhee – I loved her run on American Idol and she really should have won that year instead of whoppy Taylor Hicks and his (ugh) ‘Soul Patrol’ schtick.

The production numbers were very nicely done. I’ll be back. I have a feeling this won’t be a show I’m desperate to tune into every week, but it will stay on the watch-list as a nice change of pace.

(Will there be any slouching towards Smatcham coverage?)

Not this year, no. I’m upping my rates – blog coverage no longer going for a song. (I’ll get my coat …)
