Oh Lucas. What have you done?
Sigh. I’ll come back to that. General review stuff first – it was the Chinese Security Services’ turn to play baddie, with the CIA also hovering about, doing their usual combo of smug and shady and, thankfully, despite taking an age to get properly started, this eventually turned into a thrilling and, at times, unexpectedly hilarious episode of Spooks.
All the double-crossing, triple-crossing and finagling centred around a Chinese scientist called Amphitrite and the exciting-to-somebody-I’m-sure topic of desalination technology. Yeah, never mind that. The important thing is that Ruth somehow managed to make this funny. The moment where she tried to explain Amphitrite’s position in Greek mythology to be met with blank “Eh?” faces from the rest of the team was priceless, as was her telling them she speaks Mandarin and Wu but her Cantonese is “horrible”. I don’t know why this was hilarious but Dimitri and I both enjoyed it a lot. Heh.
It was a bit of a banner week for Ruth, now that I think of it; as well as bringing comedy to the party, she took a trip into the field as well, proving herself far more successful than Beth, who had a seriously bad day at the office. Poor Beth. Not everyone can be Ruth or Lucas. Or even Dimitri.
But at least Beth wasn’t selling her colleagues down the river, I guess. This week, anyway. Unlike Lucas who, in amongst the fun and frenetics, did something absolutely terrible to somebody absolutely blameless. Beyond betrayal, beyond lies…..beyond forgiveness? Yes, Ros’ treason was smoothed over, and Beth was given a second chance, but can they bring Lucas back from this too? I adore him, I say it nearly every week, but how can I see him the same way now that he’s crossed this line? I think the writers may have led the character into a cul-de-sac from which there’s only one exit and it isn’t a happy one. A few weeks ago, fellow fan YLizzie and I discussed the possibility of Richard Armitage leaving Spooks this year – does this mean he will be?
