Spooks s9 ep 4

Oh Lucas.  What have you done?

Sigh.  I’ll come back to that.  General review stuff first – it was the Chinese Security Services’ turn to play baddie, with the CIA also hovering about, doing their usual combo of smug and shady and, thankfully, despite taking an age to get properly started,  this eventually turned into a thrilling and, at times, unexpectedly hilarious episode of Spooks.

All the double-crossing, triple-crossing and finagling centred around a Chinese scientist called Amphitrite and the exciting-to-somebody-I’m-sure topic of desalination technology.  Yeah, never mind that.  The important thing is that Ruth somehow managed to make this funny.  The moment where she tried to explain Amphitrite’s position in Greek mythology to be met with blank “Eh?” faces from the rest of the team was priceless, as was her telling them she speaks Mandarin and Wu but her Cantonese is “horrible”.  I don’t know why this was hilarious but Dimitri and I both enjoyed it a lot.  Heh.

It was a bit of a banner week for Ruth, now that I think of it; as well as bringing comedy to the party, she took a trip into the field as well, proving herself far more successful than Beth, who had a seriously bad day at the office.  Poor Beth.  Not everyone can be Ruth or Lucas.  Or even Dimitri.

But at least Beth wasn’t selling her colleagues down the river, I guess.  This week, anyway.  Unlike Lucas who, in amongst the fun and frenetics, did something absolutely terrible to somebody absolutely blameless.  Beyond betrayal, beyond lies…..beyond forgiveness?  Yes, Ros’ treason was smoothed over, and Beth was given a second chance, but can they bring Lucas back from this too?  I adore him, I say it nearly every week, but how can I see him the same way now that he’s crossed this line?  I think the writers may have led the character into a cul-de-sac from which there’s only one exit and it isn’t a happy one.   A few weeks ago, fellow fan YLizzie and I discussed the possibility of Richard Armitage leaving Spooks this year  – does this mean he will be?

No sympathy for the youngster. He let someone know his password, hell mend him.

Of course, it was back to stupid Five. They don’t mask password input and once again they got played left right and centre.

I liked this thought. Wasn’t hopeful with Chinese in it. I’m not racist but… The whole Chinese thing has never done it for me. It’s like Casualty 1900, I have no interest.

They got the Vaughn bits interspersed, which was better than him just showing up for the last five minutes as usual.

And I thought they got some tension into the standard bomb disposal scene. I’d still like an LED timer though.

Miles better than last week for me, still too much Maya though.

I still believe Lucas is a patriot and even if this is his last series, Lucas will die a patriot. There I’ve said it.

Hi Ann Marie, welcome to Unpopcult. And fair enough. I think he’s a patriot too, but doing that to the Stephen fellow was awful.

If the arrest of the “unwitting” Stephen was necessary (and dare I say sanctioned) for a larger plan of which Lucas is aware, then it will be easily remedied. Records wiped, etc. the usual.

Very careless of this MI5 not to mask password input. Mind you they also allow people to carry and use mobile phones in Thames House.

It really is a wonder how MI5 gets through a day.

This gave me really good chuckle!

Maybe it is not a case of Lucas what have you done, but Spooks, what have you done to Lucas?

There have been a lot of comments made in a lot of places since episode 4 and as a lot of it has been about Lucas it started me thinking about Lucas and to realize how they have changed him over the journey.

On reflection I am not sure I blame him if he looks out for number one. Has anyone ever returned from a Russian prison only to find his life has become grimmer after 2 years, or whatever time has elapsed, of loyal service than it was the first days he came out. They have made Lucas so grim and charmless compared to what he was early on.

What happened to these sorts of moments.

Lucas – they asked me to spy for them
Harry – what did you say
    Lucas cheekily grinning – yes
To Adam – want a chip
Lucas and little old lady bearing macaroons.
    Lucas, Malcolm and chocolate donuts
Lucas and Roz disarming a bomb and making wisecracks.
Nice Roz Lucas chat where she tells him colleagues are good.

He has become so grim, even his love affairs are grim and joyless for both parties seemingly, (presumably apart from the obvious, or why would they bother), unless it is revealed later this one is not a love affair at all.

And yet, because this is Lucas this is happening to, I am still following it avidly. Ultra serious Lucas does seem a waste of an asset though and I don’t see why he can’t be serious about business but have been allowed to retain some of that initial personality.

I agree with you completely LadyJane. It seems that Lucas having any hint of lightness has become a designated felony.

I think that the scriptwriters have undoubtedly introduced this ridiculous storyline with Maya and Vaughn in order to write Richard Armitage out, hopefully temporarily, while he films another series of Strike Back. If they write Richard Armitage out for good then the ratings will plummet take my word for it. I suspect that the writers are hoping the introduction of the character Dimitri will slip effortlessly into Lucas North’s shoes, but I’m afraid he just hasn’t got the charisma that RA exudes. Let’s hope he gets a chance to redeem himself in another series.

Can’t imagine anyone is coming back after this series. Has to be the last?

  8. CJ Cregg October 13, 2010 / 7:24 pm

Hello, kaprekar, ladyjane and Susie, welcome aboard. I agree, ladyjane on the humour front – they do seem to have cut back on his lighter moments a lot, which is a real shame. Do you think it’s too much to hope that maybe we’ll get some more of that in his relationship with Beth? Interestingly, I think she’s deflated a bit since eps 1 and 2 when she had quite a lot of fun moments with Lucas and I really quite liked her. In 3 and 4, she’s not had the same light-hearted interaction with him, it’s all been quite business-like and her character has lost a lot of spark as a result, I think.

And Capt. – I dunno. It’s still massively successful, and rakes in viewers. Story-wise, it would make sense to end it now, I agree, but commercially…..maybe they’ll try for another year.

RA’s followers seem to be holding their collective breath since Ep 4–afraid to exhale until it becomes perfectly clear whether LucJohn had indeed irrevocably burned one of his fellow agents or not. Hopefully, ep5 will finally reveal why Vaughn’s presence was so intimidating to Agent North.

p.s. Does Ian Wylie’s ‘furniture mover’ clue, for the next ep, indicate the promised table will at long last move?

    • CJ Cregg October 14, 2010 / 9:33 pm

Hey, armitageblogger, welcome back. Count me among the breath-holders… 😉

  10. ladyjane October 14, 2010 / 3:15 pm

Yes CJ, I was loving Beth and Lucas early on, but given the all consuming personal bind Lucas is currently in, anything light would seem to be off all his agendas at the moment, and it looks as though Beth and Dimitri might pick up the baton, they had a nice moment in episode 4, although without the cheeky spark of Beth and Lucas. I still like Beth, she is so ordinary and imperfect.

  11. CJ Cregg October 14, 2010 / 9:37 pm

I’m loving Dimitri, ladyjane – he hasn’t had quite enough to do yet, but he’s done it all well. I do feel sorry for Tariq though – the technobabble he has to spout is getting worse by the week, and he doesn’t seem to have anyone to spark off of. Either give him some decent banter with Ruth or bring back Malcolm!

  12. Capt. Harold Dobey October 14, 2010 / 10:20 pm

Bring back Colin. (He was good in, erm, what was he in the other night, can’t remember.)

He could be a ghost. Could save on bugs and mics now we are in this austerity business.

It would be no dafter way of bringing him back than anyone else they’ve brought back.

It has alrealdy been announced that there will be a tenth series of Spooks. I do wish that the scriptwriters had developed a relationship between Beth and Lucas, rather than introduce Maya from his fictional past. Lucas North gave Beth a second chance, will she come up trumps and save his sorry ass from this complicated and terrible storyline in return? I’ve just read that Lucas and Harry have a confrontation in episode 7, so obviously the brown stuff is going to hit the fan soon!

    • Ann Marie October 15, 2010 / 2:54 pm

To Susie, could you be a little careful with addressing things not in the actual episode or at least include a spoiler alert? I’ve been trying not to read advance info so I can let the series unfold each and enjoy it that way. I would have preferred not to read your post had I known. Thanks.

  14. Capt. Harold Dobey October 15, 2010 / 11:36 pm

Harry does have a confrontation with someone most weeks. It was just a matter of time.
