Spiral (Engrenages) s2 ep 4

Ooooh.

Or do I mean ewwww?  This utterly riveting episode began with Laure, Pierre and co investigating two frankly horrible deaths – one suicide, one violent murder and both very unsettling.  One of them so much so, in fact, that even Shady Josephine looked unnerved.  And tried to assuage her pain with some new shoes.

The ickiness continued with the cops’ visit to a club so incredibly seedy I’m embarrassed just thinking about it, where an entirely different type of pain relief was going on.  Ewwww again.

But, grossness aside – or perhaps grossness included, I’m not sure – this was yet another fantastic episode of Spiral.  Laure continued to go loopy, Pierre finally (if unwillingly) rediscovered both his spine and his prosecutor skills – and was kind of magnificent in the process – and Josephine went shopping.  Once she’d helped out with a little light extortion.

The writers even gifted the shipper audience (assuming it’s not just me) with a moment of understanding between Pierre and Laure which I’m choosing to interpret as something much more.  Never mind kissing journalists –  encore de “Paure”, s’il vous plait.

Excellent episode. Just when you start to feel a bit of sympathy for Josephine’s predicament, she shows her true colours by being completely assuaged by a fancy pair of new shoes. It was a brilliant touch.

Pierre’s motivations are still a little unclear; he did the right thing, but without realising the consequences. It’s a compelling series.

I know what you mean about Pierre, Sherby – he didn’t really want to do the right thing, and he had no idea how it would turn out, but when he did it, I thought he was brilliant. We got a glimpse of the old clever, determined, nice Pierre when he got the confession and when he seemed quite sensitive towards Laure as well at the end, which he hadn’t been yet this season.

I like that he’s lost his shot at the big-time (that sounds like he’s been voted off X Factor, but you know what I mean ;-)) – I think (well, I hope) he’ll think “Sod it, I’m going back to hunting for the truth and being awesome again, you politicos can get knotted” and be ace again.

He seemed to be deflated at the end of the episode and had the attitude ‘well my ambition hasn’t got me anywhere, so I might as well be normal again now’. I’m intrigued, now that we’re entering the second half of the series, how they’re going to pull all the threads together.

I thought Pierre’s boss was particularly cunning in this one. Josephine is awful. New shoes are for when a bloke dumps you, not for when you cause one to hang himself. Still loving the journo.

Josephine may be evil incarnate but she’s oh so stylish.

Both of them are very attractive, but sorry you two : Pierre for the win!

How about a threeome?….errr, metaphorically speaking, that is.

Josephine, Pierre and Samy would make a very attractive ménage à trois. Très French. (I have no other response to the above post. None at all.)

I think you did very well considering. I thank you.
