The Good Wife s3 ep 1

“It’s a new day.”

Yep, it’s a new season and Alicia has a new fringe and a new spring in her step, Cary’s got a new haircut and some new tricks, and Peter’s hired the awful Sophia as his new PI.  She’s basically Kalinda with blonde hair and a smile, and to be honest, after last year’s endless Blake storyline, I think two Kalindas is two Kalindas too many; all smug and needlessly “enigmatic”.  Get over yourselves, the pair of you.

Anyway, thanks to the two Kalindas and the fact that this was more of an episode about issues, rather than characters, it wasn’t the best The Good Wife can do, but it was still top-quality, wonderfully witty tv. ”Retail rules” (“We broke it, we own it.” – Heh.) meant Alicia found herself defending a Palestinian college student on a charge of murdering his Jewish classmate.  The show handled the potential minefield infinitely better than most tv does, and mananed the difficult storyline with humour and grace.  Eli reluctantly teaming up with the Muslim philanthropist was a brilliant idea and I’m only sorry the writers didn’t stick with it in the end; I’m distinctly less interested in Eli teaming up with Dr Taub, thanks.

Out of the office, meanwhile, the courtroom scenes were the usual joy - no sign of the legendary rat video, alas, but the judge getting excited about the weaponry in a shoot’em-up computer game was very funny, as was Alicia decimating a self-aggrandising academic.  Professor: “You’re being a bit rude.” Alicia: “Yes.  And I’m just getting started.”  Ha!

Regarding the other Florricks, I don’t quite understand what’s going on with Grace’s weird new tutor, and I’m a bit unsure about Peter’s new tactics, but there’s plenty of time for both to surprise me so I’ll give both the benefit of the doubt.  And at least in amongst all the new, there was the same delicious Will and Alicia spark.  Sure, they faked us out a little bit, but not for long.  Will coming up in the lift – gosh.  Will and Alicia getting about as raunchy as you can get on network tv (and then some) while keeping your clothes on – gosh again.  What was that oddly abrupt ending all about?  I have no idea but we’ll just need to find out next week.  Meantime, somebody pass me the smelling salts, I’m all of a flutter.

Merritt Wever is going to play Will’s sister! That’s Merritt Wever. MERRITT freaking WEVER. Zoey.

Just when you think this show can’t get any better…

Have I said before that I love this show?

Faults – new blonde (why?) and Grace’s tutor, who was just straining a little too hard to be wacky. That apart, everything’s in its right place. Alan Cumming just gets better and better – you can see why Eli’s been moved to centre stage. And yet another brilliant new judge, played by Fred Melamed, who I gave a shout-out to in my review of A Serious Man: http://unpopcult.wordpress.com/2009/11/30/a-serious-man-2009/

That scene with Will and Alicia was rather hot, was it not?
